The sports centre in Crystal Palace park is a beautiful Brutalist 1950's building. It was designed by the architects at London County Council. It's strange to think now about the council in London designing cutting edge buildings, however the post war period was a boom time for municipal architecture in this part of South London.
There is a plan to 'redevelop' the park which includes a rebuilding of the Crystal Palace itself (by a Chinese consortium to whom the council will lease nearly half of this public park to - don't get me started on that). This will probably lead to a redesign the area around the sports centre, which currently has a raised concrete walkway and these fantastic roof lights. Shame.
